How it works An insight into how aroma therapy can help you

Essential oils when inhaled may enter the body via the olfactory system, when diluted and applied externally; essential oil molecules may permeate skin.

Once within your system, essential oil will work to re-establish harmony and revitalize those systems or organs where there is a malfunction or lack of balance. Their ability to restore balance of both body and mind.

Essential oils and olfaction:
When inhaled, essential oil particles are taken directly to the roof of the nose, where the receptor cells of the olfactory system are situated. From each receptor cell protrude this hairs (cilia) which register and transmit information about the aromas, via the olfactory bulb, to the center of the brain. From here, electro-chemical messages are forwarded to the area of the brain associated with smell. These trigger the release of neurochemicals. Which may be sedative, relaxing, stimulating, or emphoric in effect. Other messages may be relayed to part of the body registering the oils physical effects. Aromatic particles also travel down the nasal passages to the lungs.

Essential oils and the skin:
When dissolved in the carrier and rubbed into the skin or when dispersed in water, tiny essential oil molecules readily permeate the skin, via the pores and hair follicles, they can reach the fine, blood carrying capillaries. Once in the bloodstream, they are transported round the body and filtered through to the cells and body fluids. Mucous membranes are also receptive to essential oils
